The Short Answer
A bot-free AI notetaker records the meeting from your own computer, your microphone and the call's audio, instead of sending a "notetaker" guest into the call. Nobody new appears in the participant list, the meeting feels normal, and you still get a transcript, a summary and the action items when it ends.
Why People Are Dropping Meeting Bots
Meeting bots made AI notes popular, but they come with friction:
- They change the room. A client sees "Otter Notetaker" or "Fireflies.ai" join, and the first two minutes become a conversation about the bot.
- Some hosts block them. Many companies remove unknown participants, so the bot never gets in.
- They only work where the bot can go. A bot can't join a meeting in a café or a hallway conversation.
How Bot-Free Notetakers Work
On a Mac, an app can capture two things at once: your microphone and the audio coming out of the call. Mochi does this when you press record, in Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or any other call. The audio is transcribed, your own notes are combined with the transcript, and you get a summary you can edit.
For meetings in person, the same idea moves to your phone or watch: you record on iPhone or Apple Watch and get the same summary afterwards.
What to Check Before You Choose
- Where it records. Mac only, or Windows too? Is there an app for in-person meetings?
- Languages. If you meet in more than one language, check transcription quality in each one. Mochi transcribes English and Hebrew.
- What happens to the audio. Look for a clear answer. Mochi sends audio for transcription and deletes it afterwards (how Mochi handles your data).
- What comes after the summary. Action items, a follow-up email, notes sent to your CRM or Slack.
- Consent. A bot announces itself; bot-free tools don't, so let people know you're taking notes.
Bot-Free Doesn't Mean No Bot Ever
Sometimes a bot is the right tool, for example to record a call you can't attend. Mochi Pro and Executive include an optional in-call notetaker for that, while recording on the Mac never needs one.
Try It
Mochi takes notes without a bot on the Mac, in person on iPhone and Apple Watch, and also books the meeting with a booking page. Start free with 14 days of Executive, or compare Mochi with other notetakers.
